Man Gets 20 Years For Fatal DWI Crash
A Crawford County man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a fatal crash in 2024 that killed one person and seriously injured another.
Cody A. Carey, 31, Steelville, received a 15-year sentence for being intoxicated in a head-on collision that took the life of Joshua Morgan.
Judge Megan Seay sentenced him to another five-year sentence for the injuries caused to Leah Morgan.
The cases will run consecutively.
Carey’s blood alcohol level was .099 at the time of the crash, according to the preliminary breath test. Carey told a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper that he drank two beers and a shot of Fireball about one hour before the crash on Highway 8 and Indian Springs Road on June 8.
Carey was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2019 Ford F-150, driven by Joshua Morgan around 6:08 p.m.
Joshua Morgan was transported to Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:14 p.m.
Leah Morgan was critically injured. She was taken via helicopter to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.
Carey had minor injuries.
He had several felony convictions, including second-degree burglary and stealing a fire arm from 2014 and driving while intoxicated in 2016.
