Troop I Patrols Busy During Memorial Day
Memorial Day weekend was busy for Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Troop I, which includes Crawford, Phelps, Maries, Iron, Dent, Pulaski and Laclede counties, had seven accidents during the Memorial Day counting period.
The counting period lasted from 6 p.m. on Friday, May 26 to 6 p.m. on Monday, May 29.
Of those seven accidents, two were fatal.
A Steelville man died May 27 after crashing his motorcycle on Hickory Road.
James H. Goers, 62, was northeast of Steelville when he drove off the road, struck a ditch and overturned on a 2005 Harley Davidson.
Goers was not wearing a safety device. He was taken to Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
A St. James woman had fatal injuries May 28 after being ejected from a Dune buggy in Phelps County.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Chandra D. Moffet, 42, was the passenger in a 1981 Dune buggy, driven by Paul G. Rice, 49, Catawissa.
Rice lost control on County Road 1140, traveling off the road and overturning.
Moffet, who was not wearing a safety device, was ejected. She was pronounced at the scene.
Rice was taken to Phelps Health with minor injuries.
An Iowa man on May 27 was flown to Columbia after losing control his Harley Davidson on Highway M, four miles west of Edgar Springs.
Neil Nerem, 38, Boone, Iowa, was not wearing a safety device.
A St. James woman was flown to Springfield after being ejected from a Polaris RZR.
Kristi Becklenberg, 49, was the passenger, which was on a private road north of Highway ZZ in Phelps County.
She was not wearing a safety device.
Later in Phelps County, a 13-year-old Camdenton female traveling on a Yamaha Timberwolf struck a pothole on National Forest Service Road, lost control and overturned.
The teen was not wearing a safety device.
She was flown to Columbia for treatment.
The highway patrol said a House Springs man had moderate injuries May 28.
A 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Matthew Shovlin, 19, Arnold, was traveling too fast for conditions on Blunt Road.
Shovlin over-corrected and struck a tree.
Nico Portell, 19, House Springs, was taken to Washington County Memorial for treatment.
Shovlin was uninjured.
The final accident investigated during the counting period happened May 28 in Pulaski County.
Christopher E. Thiltgen, 19, Dixon, drove off Highway 133, struck a fence and came to a rest in a field in a 2010 GMC Sierra.
He was flown to Columbia with serious injuries.
