Treasurer Corrects Record On County Website

Crawford County Treasurer Karen Sikes corrected information that was in the July 13 issue of the Independent News about the county website.

In the article, it was incorrectly reported that Sikes was having issues relaying information to Brian Andrews, who works for Steelville Telephone Exchange.

STE handles telecommunications for the county and is contracted to build a website.

Sikes said she was not having issues contacting Andrews, but that she had spoken to him about the website not being updated.

Andrews, Sikes said, told her that County Clerk John Martin was the contact person for the updates and that he had been trying to get the project started since 2020.

Sikes said that Andrews told her he met with Martin, but the clerk did not have any content to give him.

Martin said during the July 5 meeting that each county office holder should be in charge of giving Andrews content for the page.

“I stated we did not know we could or even should be doing this because no one had shared any of this information,” Sikes said in an email to the Independent News. “The excuse was always put on STE having it in our contract to build the website when questions were asked about it during commission meetings.”

The Independent News also incorrectly reported that Presiding Commissioner Leo Sanders said a memo was sent to each office holder to let them know they would need to get their content to Andrews, but Sikes said Sanders actually said a memo “should” be sent out.

“This still has not been done,” Sikes said.

Sikes said Martin was, and still is, the point person on the project, though Martin said during the July 5 meeting that he is not the point person.

Martin said because of Andrews’ busy schedule, he has had trouble finding the time to finish the project out.

He also said that he’s hoping the new county website will go live at some point in August.
