Sales Tax Tumbles To New June Low

Crawford County’s general revenue sales tax tumbled for June.

The county collected $162,752.08, a 17 percent decline from June 2022. It is the lowest June total since 2019 when the county brought in $169,282.48.

The last time the county had a lower June was 2018, which was four months before the newly-passed sales tax increase went into effect.

In 2021 and 2022, Crawford County totaled $191,927.21 and $197,731.48, respectively. 

Sales tax revenue has fallen year-over-year in the last three months.

April saw the county take a 33 percent dip from April 2022.

Revenue rebounded in May, but only a 0.61 percent year-over-year increase.

The last three months of revenue collection come just as the county opened 2023 on a blistering pace. 

Revenue was up 3.5 percent for December, 26 percent for January, 19 percent for February and 4.8 percent for March.

The county has totaled $1,437,286.52 so far in 2023. 

Despite the stall during the summer months, the county isn’t far off from the revenue collected at the same point in 2022. While revenue has been flat, the early months of 2023 have helped blunt some of its effects.

At this point last year, the county had received $1,443,799.61.

In the last three Julys, Crawford County’s sales tax has increased. The county will hope the drought and extreme heat experienced last month did not drive away the tourism dollars that have provided a boost to revenue.

The capital improvement and law enforcement sales taxes are separate.

Both were down 18.9 percent year-over-year for June, collecting $76,5610.10. The county collected around $94,466.01 last June.

The county has collected around $679,975 for both funds through 2023. At the same point in 2022, Crawford County collected more than $689,000. 

State

Missouri’s sales and use tax collection increased 15.6 percent for June. The state has collected $2.94 billion in sales and use taxes.

Net general revenue fell more than 17 percent year-over-year, though.
