Bourbon Boosters Hoping To Restore Mural
The mural splashed across the wall of Bourbon Blooms has seen better days.
The paint is fading after nearly 20 years and the Bourbon Boosters are hoping to restore its glory.
Bourbon Ward 2 Alderwoman Mary Heywood told the city council Tuesday that night the Boosters are looking at ways of making it happen.
Heywood told the Independent News the mural must be completely removed.
They are hoping to receive grants that would give them the necessary funding.
The mural was part of Bourbon’s sesquecennential celebration in 2003, celebrating 150 years of the city.
The artist, who is no longer in the area, used old photos to paint the mural.
It depicts the history of Bourbon and important places around that history, Heywood said.
“It was a beautiful mural in its day,” she said. “Over the last five years the Bourbon Boosters have discussed what to do with it, from trying to repair it, to replacing it, to just painting over it.”
The mural was originally painted on the wall of Bourbon Drug, owned by the late Tom Burnett.
The drugstore closed in 2014 after Burnett’s death and for awhile was BOR2. That closed in March and reopened this year as Bourbon Blooms, a flower shop.
Heywood said that with owner Angela Dace’s permission, the decision has been made to replace it.
Heywood said the funds from raised from the Fall Festival have already been earmarked for a new Christmas tree and banners, so the Boosters will be seeking donations to finish the mural projects.
